The paradox of loneliness: Why are young people the loneliest generation in a seemingly increasingly connected world?
For Noreena Hertz, loneliness is more than a lack of love, companionship or intimacy. She is above the feeling of being ignored by those around her, be it family, friends, neighbours. In Hertz’s definition of loneliness, there is also a lack of support in a family and social context, but also an exclusion at an economic and political level. In this logic, loneliness, with this feeling of exclusion, is one of the causes of the advance registered by the populist parties.
